Questions and answers
What ViiTing does, how licences work, and where music rights fit in. If your question isn't here, write to us.
The software
What exactly does ViiTing do?
It plays your music library to a schedule. You set the rules — which genres, how often a voice track or a commercial should land, what plays at eight o'clock sharp — and it builds and runs the queue. It's a playout system, not a streaming service.
Does it stream to the internet?
No. ViiTing plays audio out of your computer's sound card or USB interface. If you also stream, you run ViiTing alongside your usual encoder in the normal way.
What is a zone?
A zone is an independent player with its own queue, rules and audio output. One zone is a station. Four zones is a hotel with different music in the lobby, the restaurant, by the pool and in the gym, all from one computer.
Can I run more than four zones?
Four zones is the limit on one computer. If you need more, run ViiTing on a second machine. The Network licence covers several computers under one licence.
What hardware do I need for several zones?
A USB audio interface with an output per zone, or several sound cards. ViiTing lists whatever Windows can see and you pick an output for each zone.
Does it work without an internet connection?
Yes, completely. The only feature that needs the internet is controlling the station from outside your own network.
Which audio files does it play?
MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG and AAC. Tags are read on import so your titles and artists appear correctly.
Licences and updates
Is the free version really free?
Yes. One zone, full scheduling and rotation, no time limit and no watermark. Paid licences add zones, remote control from anywhere and priority support.
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay once and the software is yours. Updates are included for twelve months. After that your version keeps working; renewing only gets you newer versions.
Can I install it on more than one computer?
Studio covers one machine. Network covers several machines and several sites under one licence. Moving a licence between computers is fine at any time.
Music rights
Do I need a music licence to use ViiTing?
ViiTing is playback software and ships with no music at all. Whatever licences apply to the music you play are yours to arrange, exactly as they would be with any other playout system or with a CD player.
What licences do stations usually need?
It depends on the country and on how you broadcast. In the United States that generally means the performing rights organisations for the songs themselves, and SoundExchange as well if you stream online. Music played inside a business, such as a lobby or a gym, is also a public performance and needs covering. Check with a licensing body or an attorney for your own situation — we can't advise on it.
Does ViiTing help with reporting?
Every track played is written to the play log with its time and category, so you have an accurate record when you need to report what aired.
